Gooseberry Rice Recipe

Nellikai | Gooseberry is  packed with lots of nutrients. I used to buy it as and when its available. But mostly I used to eat it raw and didn’t explore much in cooking with gooseberry. However, this time I reserved few to try some easy recipes. Here is one such quick rice recipe. If we already have the cooked rice ready, this recipe can be prepared in less than 10 minutes. This will be a good option for lunch box recipes too. The preparation method looks pretty closer to the lemon rice preparation. Moreover the nellikai rice resembles lemon rice in both taste and look.

Cooked Rice 2 Cups
Nellikai | Gooseberry 3- 4 Nos
Turmeric Powder 1/4 Teaspoon
Assafoetida A Pinch
Salt To Taste
Oil 1 – 2 Teaspoons

To Temper

Mustard 1/2 Teaspoon
Channa Dhal 1 Teaspoon
Peanuts 2 Tablespoons
Green Chillies 1 No
Red Chillies 2 Nos
Curry Leaves A Sprig

Preparation Method

Wash and cook the rice and keep it ready. I used raw rice in this recipe. Wash the gooseberry and grate them and discard the seeds.

Heat a pan and add oil. Once it is hot, add the ingredients specified under “ To Temper” table and fry them.

Then add asafoetida, salt, turmeric and also add the grated gooseberry. Saute for a minute or two.

Add the cooked rice and mix them gently till it gets coated well in the rice. Serve with side dish of your choice.
