Black Lentils Gravy Recipe

Black Lentils is very very healthy and nutritious. My mom keeps telling me to include this balck lentils in our diet atleast once a week. Mostly I will make blackgram sundal. For a change tried this gravy to have it along with cabbage paratha. Both tasted yummy. Other than the time taken for soaking the lentils, the gravy can be prepared pretty quick. It can be served along with any types of rotis/ Parathas.

Preparation Time : 10 Minutes
Cooking Time : 15 Minutes (Except the time taken for soaking the lentils)
Serves : 3


Black Lentils 1/2 Cup
Moong Dhal 1 Tablespoon
Ginger A Small Piece (Chopped)
Green Chillies 1 No (Slit into halves)
Onion 1 No (Finely Chopped)
Tomato 2 Nos (Chopped)
Cumin Seeds 1/4 Teaspoon
Turmeric Powder A Pinch
Chilli Powder 1 Teaspoon
Cumin Powder 1/2 Teaspoon
Fennel Seeds Powder 1/4 Teaspoon
Garam Masala 1/4 Teaspoon
Cilantro / Coriander Leaves Little (Chopped)
Butter 1 Teaspoon
Oil 1 Teaspoon
Salt To Taste

Preparation Method

Wash and soak black lentils for 8 hours. After 8 hours pressure cook them for 3 whistles alond with moondhal, ginger and green chillies. Once it is cooked, slighlty mash them. (Do not mash them completely)

Heat a pan and add butter and oil. Once it is hot, temper with cumin seeds. Add onion and saute till the onion turns into light brown colour.

Black Lentils Gravy Recipe Step 2
Add tomatoes and cook till it becomes mushy. When oil starts oozing out from the gravy, add turmeric powder, chilli powder, cumin powder, fennel seeds powder and mix well.

Black Lentils Gravy Recipe Step 3
Add the cooked dhal to the gravy and mix well. Add water to the required consistency, bring it to boil. Add required amount of salt.

Black Lentils Gravy Recipe Step 4
Let it get cooked for 3 minutes and sprinkle some garam masala. Give it a mix. Finally add some chopped cilantro and turn off the flame.
