Plantain Stem Soup Recipe

Here comes a healthy soup recipe. Plantain stem | Vazhaithandu is very healthy one with lot of benefits. Off late, I started trying out various soup recipes and that is the reason you could see more soup recipes being posted here. We both prefer having soups during tea time and we like it as well. We used to get plantain stem very rarely in our place. So whenever I find them, I never missed to grab one. I used to make only Vazhaithandu poriyal. But I have heard from my mom that we can make soup out of it. So me and my mom discussed and came up with this recipe. It tasted really good and we  finished the whole bowl Smile

Banana Stem Soup Recipe

Vazhaithandu Soup Recipe
Preparation Time : 10 Minutes
Cooking Time      : 10 Minutes
Serves  : 3

Ingredients

Plantain Stem 3/4 Cup (Chopped)
Onion / Shallots 1 Tablespoon (Chopped)
Green Chillies 1 No (Chopped)
Curry Leaves 5 – 6 Nos
Cumin Seeds 1 Teaspoon
Turmeric Powder 1 Teaspoon
Sesame Oil / Gingely Oil 1 Teaspoon
Salt To Taste
Pepper Powder 1 Teaspoon

Preparation Method

The banana stem will have outer rings may be one or two that has to be removed and the innermost part has to be taken. Cut them into circular discs. After cutting each of the discs, you can see some fibre attached to it. Remove the fibres with your fingers and repeat the same till you cut the entire length of the banana stem.

Take a bowl of water and add buttermilk / curd to it and mix well. Now cut the circular discs of banana stem into small cubes and drop them into a bowl containing buttermilk, so that the colour of the banana stems remains the same. Let it remain for 10 minutes.

Pressure cook them for 2 whistles. If you cook them in a pan, add little more water and cook till the plantain stem gets cooked. Take out the cooked plantain stem and grind them to a paste by adding little water. You can also use the water used for boiling the plantain stem.

Notes

Gingely oil gives a nice taste to the soup. If not, any cooking oil can be used.

I actually took all the items (Onion, Green chillies, curry leaves) and grounded them. If you don’t prefer, just take the plantain stem and grind it.

Adding freshly chopped coriander leaves before serving gives an extra flavor to the soup.
