Horsegram Soup Recipe
Kollu soup recipe is suggested by my mom when we had cold. Generally I prefer having a hot soup with lot of pepper powder when I used to get cold. Kollu / Horsegram soup preparation is very simple and it can be prepared in a pressure cooker within 10 – 15 minutes. My mom makes kollu rasam and kollu chutney quite frequently as it is good for health. I am yet to get the recipe for these both from her. Planning to try that out very soon and share it with you.

Cooking Time      : 15 Minutes
Serves   : 4

Ingredients

Cinnamon 1 Small Stick
Bay leaves 1 No
Whole Black Pepper 1 Teaspoon
Fennel Seeds 1/2 Teaspoon
Cumin Seeds 1/2 Teaspoon
Curry Leaves A Strig
Horsegram / Kollu 1/4 Cup
Green Chillies 1 No
Onion 1 No (Small)
Tomato 1 No (Small)
Cilantro / Coriander leaves Little
Turmeric Powder A Pinch
Salt To Taste
Oil 1/2 Tablespoon

Preparation Method

Wash the horsegram and soak them in water for atleast 5 – 6 hours. I soaked them overnight.

Heat a pressure cooker and add oil. Once it is hot, add pepper and wait for it to crackle.Add cinnamon, Bay leaves, curry leaves, fennel seeds, cumin seeds and wait till it splutters.

Add green chillies, onion and saute them well. Drain the water from the horse gram and add it to the mixture and stir well.

Add tomatoes and cook till it becomes mushy.Add salt, turmeric powder. Mix well.

Add around 1 – 2 cups of water and pressure cook for 3 whistles. If cooking in a pan, cook till the horsegram gets cooked. Finally add chopped cilantro / Coriander leaves.

    Notes

Adding sesame oil/ Gingelly oil gives a nice flavour to the soup.

While serving, sprinkle some pepper powder it preferred.

If cooking in a pan, add little more water as it takes long time to get cooked.
