Aval upma is a real quick breakfast or dinner recipe. It takes not more than 10 minutes to prepare. Whenever there is a need for me to cook dinner just for myself, this will be my first choice as I do not need to spend much time in the kitchen. Recenlty I made this for dinner, as I was tiresome after a whole day of shopping. It can be served with any chutney.
Aval / Poha / Flattened Rice 1 Cup
Green Chillies 1 No
Ginger A Small Piece (Chopped)
Onion 1 No (Chopped)
Peanuts 1 Tablespoon
Grated Coconut 1 Tablespoon
Salt To Taste
Oil 1 Teaspoon

To Temper
Mustard 1/2 Teaspoon
Urad Dhal 1/2 Teaspoon
Channa Dhal 1 Teaspoon
Curry Leaves A Strig

Preparation  Method
  • Wash the aval in water and drain the water completely.
  • Add water just enough to wet the aval. Do not add more water as it makes it mushy.
  • Let the aval be soaked for 10 minutes.
  • Heat a pan and add oil. Once it is hot, add the items given under “To Temper” Table and wait till they splutter.
  • Add peanuts and curry leaves and roast for a minute.

  • Add green chillies and ginger and then add onion and saute them well.
  • Add the soaked aval and mix gently.

  • Reduce the flame and cover the pan with a lid and cook for 3 minutes.
  • Turn off the flame and add some grated coconut. Give it a mix and serve hot.
