Nethili Karuvadu Thokku | Dry Fish Recipes

I was introduced to this recipe for the first time through one of my aunts. Since then I started pestering my mom to prepare this at home. My mom being a vegetarian, not interested to cook especially for the aroma that comes out of it. Beyond all those hesitation, she learnt this recipe from my aunt and cooked for me Smile. It tastes awesome with curd rice. Somehow its been years since I tasted the dry fish recipe. In my recent shopping to one of the Indian stores, dried anchovies got caught in my eyes and I grabbed one of those. Here is the first recipe that I tried with that!

Ingredients
Dried Anchovies 20 nos
Mustard 1/2 Teaspoon
Fennel Seeds 1 Teaspoon
Curry Leaves 1 Strig
Shallots / Onions 7 Nos / 1 Medium Sized
Tomato 1 No
Turmeric Powder A Pinch
Chilli Powder 1 Teaspoon
Coriander Powder 1 Teaspoon
Green Chillies 1 No
Salt To Taste
Seasame Oil 2 Teaspoons

Preparation Method
  • Add the dried anchovies to warm water and soak for 15 minutes so that it becomes soft.
  • Remove the head and tail. (I bought headless Anchovies). Clean them well by washing it multiple times. Some dried fish may contain sand, so make sure it is completely removed while washing.

  • Heat a pan and add oil Once it is hot, add fennel seeds, curry leaves and fry them well.
  • Add onion, green chillies, salt and saute them till it turns to light brown colour.

  • Add salt and turmeric Powder.
  • Add tomatoes and cook till it becomes mushy.
  • Add chilli powder and coriander powder.

  • Add the dried fish and cook them well for 2 minutes.

  • Add little water and cook till the tried fish is completely cooked.
  • Finally turn off the flame and transfer it to a bowl for serving
