Oma Podi Recipe

Oma Podi is a favourite savoury of me and my mom. We never get bored of this snack. The recipe is just simple. Can be served during tea time or can be packed as a snack box for kids. It can be prepared in bulk and stored for almost a week. Oma Podi is one of the snack that I used to prepare whenever there is no snack at home and wanted to prepare something quick.

How to make Oma Podi
Oma Podi Recipe
Preparation Time : 5 Minutes
Cooking Time        : 15 Minutes
Serves     : 4
Besan / Gram Flour 1 Cup
Rice Flour 1/4 Cup
Carom seeds / Omam / Ajwain 1 Teaspoon
Ghee 1/2 Tablespoon
Asafoetida A Pinch
Chilli Powder 1 Teaspoon
Salt To Taste
Oil For Frying

Preparation Method
Dry roast the carom seeds or omam and soak them in water for 15 minutes.

In a bowl add besan, rice flour, salt, asafoetida, chilli powder and mix well.

To that add ghee and mix it again without lumps.

Filter the water soaked with omam and add the water to the flour.Add water little by little and knead the dough till it becomes smooth.

Take a small amount of the dough and keep it in the string hopper / Idiyappam Press.
Meanwhile heat oil in a tawa and press the dough in the circular motion using idiyappam press. Press it in a quantity that the oil can hold. Do not press in excess as it might not get fried well.

Wait till one side gets cooked and then flip over to the other side. Once it is done, the sound will be stopped completely. At that stage drain the excess oil and transfer it to a bowl topped with paper towel / Colander.

Repeat the same process in batches till all the dough is done. Allow the oma podi to cool down and gently break them randomly and transfer them to an airtight container and enjoy at your tea time.
