Vazhaithandu Recipe

Banana Stem is a very healthy and whenever I find it in the store I never fail to buy one. Though the cutting part requires lot of patience as it has lot of fibre which has to be removed, it is worth doing it for its nutritious value. My husband never used to like it earlier, but after getting to know about its health benefits, he stopped saying “No” to this recipe. Apart from Poriyal, I used to make Vazhaithandu Soup as well which is equally tasty as other usual soups.

Banana Stem Medium sized length
Mustard 1/2 Teaspoon
Urad Dhal 1 Teaspoon
Onion 1 No (small sized)
Green Chillies 2 Nos
Grated Coconut 1 – 2 Tablespoons
Salt To Taste
Oil 1 Teaspoon
Buttermilk / Curd 2 Teaspoons

Preparation Method

The banana stem will have outerrings may be one or two that has to be removed and the innermost part has to be taken. Cut them into circular discs. After cutting each of the discs, you can see some fibre attached to it.

Remove the fibres with your fingers and repeat the same till you cut the entire length of the banana stem. Take a bowl of water and add buttermilk / curd to it and mix well.

Now cut the circular discs of banana stem into small cubes and drop them into a bowl containing buttermilk, so that the colour of the banana stems remains the same. Let it remain for 10 minutes.

Vazhaithandu Poriyal Recipe Step 1 Heat a pan and add oil. Once it is hot, add mustard and wait for it to splutter. Add urad dhal and wait till it turns to light brown colour. Add green chillies, onion and saute then well for a minute.

Drain the water from the cut banana stem and add them into the pan. Close with the lid and cook for 7 – 10 minutes by adding required salt.

Finally add the grated coconut, mix well and serve.
