Chettinad Tomato Soup Recipe

I tasted this Chettinad Tomato Soup in one of the chettinad weddings and I became a fan of it. It is quite different from the usual creamy tomato soup. Got this recipe a week back and gave it a try. It was just awesome and everyone loved it. I would like to have lots of soups during cold weather and this tomato soup recipe is one of the soups that we both like and have it quite frequent.

Cooking Time       : 10 Minutes
Serves  : 2


Cinnamon 1 Small Stick
Bay leaves 1 No
Whole Black Pepper 1 Teaspoon
Fennel Seeds 1/2 Teaspoon
Cumin Seeds 1/2 Teaspoon
Curry Leaves A Strig
Toor Dhal 1 Teaspoon
Moong Dhal 1 Teaspoon
Green Chillies 1 No
Onion 1 No (Small)
Tomato 1 No (Small)
Cilantro / Coriander leaves Little
Turmeric Powder A Pinch
Salt To Taste
Oil 1/2 Tablespoon

Preparation Method

Heat a pressure cooker / pan and add oil. Once it is hot, add pepper and wait for it to crackle. Add cinnamon, Bay leaves, curry leaves, fennel seeds, cumin seeds and wait till it splutters.

Add moong dhal, toor dhal and fry them for a minute. Make sure it does not get roasted too much. Add green chillies, onion and saute them well. Add tomatoes and cook till it becomes mushy.

Add salt, turmeric powder. Mix well. Add around 1 – 2 cups of water and pressure cook for 2 whistles. If cooking in a pan, cook till the dhal gets cooked completely.

Finally add cilantro / Coriander leaves. This soup can be served as such or if you prefer it to be clear then strain it through a strainer and then serve.
