Chicken Kuzhmabu - South Indian Style



Chicken 500 Grams
Onion 1 No (Finely Chopped)
Tomato 1 No (Finely Chopped)
Turmeric Powder A Pinch
Ginger Garlic Paste 1 Tablespoon
Salt To Taste
Oil 2 Tablespoons

To Grind

Red Chillies 5 Nos
Coriander Seeds 2 Tablespoons
Fennel Seeds 1 Tablespoon
Cumin Seeds 1 Tablespoon
Black Pepper 1 Tablespoon
Grated Coconut 1 Tablespoon
Poppy Seeds 1 Tablespoon
Cinnamon 1 Stick
Cardamom 2 Nos
Cloves 4 Nos


To Temper

Red Chillies 2 Nos
Mustard 1/2 Tablespoon
Anise 1 No
Curry leaves 1 Strig
Bay Leaves 1 No

Preparation Method
  • Clean and wash the chicken around 3 – 4 times.
  • Dry roast all the ingredients listed under “To Grind” table and grind them to a fine powder and have it ready.

  • Heat a pressure cooker, add oil. Once it is hot, add mustard, red chillies, bay leaves, anise and curry leaves.
  • Add onion and saute for 2 minutes.
  • Add ginger garlic paste and fry everything together till the raw smell goes off.
  • Add chopped tomato and cook till the tomatoes become mushy.

  • Add the washed chicken and give it a mix.
  • Add turmeric powder and the ground mixture to the chicken and mix everything well.
  • Add salt and required amount of water.

  • Pressure cook for 2 whistles and then turn off the flame.
